What is moissanite?
Moissanite is a rare, naturally occurring mineral also known as silicon carbide, which was first discovered by the Nobel Prize-winning chemist, Dr. Henri Moissan, at the site of a massive meteorite strike in Arizona. This intriguing new stone was named “moissanite” in his honor. It has a unique brilliance and fire that is very similar to diamond. Its durability and ease of care make it a great choice of engagement rings. Charles and Colvard moissanite is a lab created mineral, grown and cut here in the United States.
Moissanite is approximately 10% lighter in weight than diamond of the same diameter. So moissanites will weigh less in carats when compared to diamonds of the same millimeter size. Some people are more familiar with carat weight than with millimeter size, so when comparing the millimeter size of the loose moissanite available here, the equivalent diamond weights are:
4mm/.33ct moissanite weight/.30ct diamond equivalent weight
4.5mm/.42ct moissanite weight/.50ct diamond equivalent weight
5mm/.57ct moissanite weight/.60ct diamond equivalent weight
5.5mm/.75ct moissanite weight/.80ct diamond equivalent weight
6mm/.96ct moissanite weight/1.10ct diamond equivalent weight
6.5mm/1.21ct moissanite weight/1.30ct diamond equivalent weight
7mm/1.49ct moissanite weight/1.70ct diamond equivalent weight
7.5mm/1.80ct moissanite weight/2.00ct diamond equivalent weight
8mm/2.15ct moissanite weight/2.40ct diamond equivalent weight
8.5mm/2.54ct moissanite weight/2.80ct diamond equivalent weight
9mm/2.98ct moissanite weight/3.30ct diamond equivalent weight
9.5mm/3.74ct moissanite weight/4.20ct diamond equivalent weight
